Glendalough (Irish: Gleann Dá Loch, meaning Glen of Two Lakes) is a glacial valley located in County Wicklow, Ireland. This is a popular recreational area, both for picniking and is a starting point for a variety of walks. There is a network of colour coded walking trails in the Glendalough valley. There are nine walks of varying difficulty to choose from. We have choosen one going around the lakes through the hills. There is plenty of wildlife to admire, especially when you go further away from pickning areas and visitor centre. However, we were quite surprised to see these deers grazing in such an abundance. They kept their distance but were not afraid of hikers. I guess they just got used to!
Trivia:
The mammals of Glendalough can be put into two groups according to whether they are native or introduced. Not all the mammals living in the Park made it here by themselves. Some were introduced by man and are breeding successfully within the Park, sometimes to the detriment of the native inhabitants. For example, the introduced Japanese Sika Deer interbreeds with the native Red Deer. There are now no pure bred Red Deer in the Wicklow Mountains.
